Happy Thanksgiving
Patrick Lancer, Wednesday November 22nd, 2006On this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for many things. Among those items, but in no particular spot, I am thankful for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a very nice little holiday when you slow down to think about it.

There are the obvious benefits of Food, Family, and Fun. Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays where the majority of the food is nutritional. I won’t say that it's all healthy, and it is certainly in excess. Yet, unlike many other major holidays which feature candy, Thanksgiving has representatives from all of the food groups. Halloween, Easter, and Valentine’s Day are all sponsored by major candy manufactures in a secret syndicate formed with the nation’s top dentists, in a scheme to get your money. Thanksgiving the exception to the rule, and I give thanks for that. I also give thanks for the family. I know it sounds corny, but it is true. Other holidays are for kids (Halloween), for lovers (Valentine’s Day), or for friends (Forth of July and New Year’s), whereas Thanksgiving is one of the few times when the whole family can get together in one big, happy, photogenic conglomeration. And then there is the fun. I am not a big fan of football. But you don’t need to be a fan to enjoy Thanksgiving. Personally, I get my kicks out of making a volcano with mashed potatoes and using the gravy as lava.
But there are other benefits which are less obvious -- the things that make Thanksgiving great. Commercialism is a problem with so many holidays, but Thanksgiving just isn’t a target. This could be due to its proximity to Christmas. Even in July, Christmas sales start popping up and catalogues get mailed out. By late November, everyone is in full swing with the Christmas bug. It makes Thanksgiving a little bit more low-key. In essence, it is the calm before the storm. There is no pressure with Thanksgiving. Except for the expectations of a good meal, people really don’t fret about the day all that much. There are no presents, no costumes, and no hard feelings if you forget the green-bean casserole.
Have a good one,
