Smells like Holiday Spirit
Patrick Lancer, Thursday December 21st, 2006Christmas is like sex. The more you have, the less exciting it is. When you are young, Christmas is one of those magical things that are totally amazing, and you wish it would happen every day of the year. As you age and experience it more, you being to realize that it is not all it is made out to be. You don’t enjoy it like you used to. You don’t get everything you want. It becomes something that is tedious, and it is not so special when it comes around. The toys are no longer as important, and it becomes the same thing every time around. You stop telling people what you want, and you just let them guess.

I could go on with that metaphor forever, but I think you get the point. Christmas is one of those things that just loose their power with age. The actual event is no longer the magical morning it once was. Really, if I do not get something I really want I can just go and buy it. Five years ago, I did not have that ability. I had no money, no car, and no chances. If I wanted something, I would ask for it for Christmas. If I was lucky, I would get the goods. If not, there was always next year. These days, I really am apathetic about what I get. No wants mean no disappointments, and how can I have wants when I have money?
Still, there is one part about Christmas that really still excites me. They say that there is “something in the air” before Christmas. It’s not snow, or exhaust. It is hope. For some it is the hope of toys, for others it is the hope of peace or just the hope for something good once and a while. Christmas is not so much an event; so much as it is a progression. So close to the end of the year, the Christmas season is a breather from the day to day repetitive nature of life. The anticipation of it is what makes it great. There is no other holiday that people commit so much time to. Call it a product of commercialism and greed if you will. Call it a waste of time and a waste of money, Scrooge. For me, it is a chance and a change. And at this time of year, that’s exactly what I need.
"And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and goodwill toward men,'" Linus says. "And that's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown."
